Corpus Christi Catholic Youth Organization
MISSION: Corpus Christi CYO is committed to providing opportunities that helps bring youth to their full human potential. Coprus Christi CYO provides opportunities for young people to develop strong moral character, self-esteem and leadership qualities through activities of a social, educational, recreational and athletic nature.
The CYO began in 1930 as an athletic program for elementary and high school youth in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Bishop Sheil founded the CYO as a parish-based program. His experiences as a prison chaplain led him to see the beneficial impact of the athletic program on the prisoners. The program emphasized training youth in boxing and only later expanded to include other sports. In 1932, the CYO Center was established in Chicago and in 1937 the Catholic Youth Bureau was established in Washington.
Almost from the beginning, the CYO was energetically moved forward with the enthusiastic help of young priests in the parishes.
The Catholic Church, of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas has always taken great interest in the activities of young people. Realizing that the Catholic faith must influence young people in the their development and education, the Church has made every effort to provide wholesome activities that are of interest to youth.
These activities are spiritual, cultural, social, athletic and educational in nature.
The Corpus Christi CYO currently organizes athletic competition in volleyball and basketball for boys and girls, third through sixth grade. The CCCYO looks to expand to other sports and other youth activities as we continue to grow!
